Central Subway Update: Stockton Street Closure

July 31, 2012

Several local news agencies have covered the closure of Stockton Street from Ellis to Geary, which began on Monday July 30, 2012 and will continue for the next several years. The Union Square BID was prepared for the changes and has worked to keep the businesses along Stockton St. informed. We continue to enjoy heavy foot traffic in the area and don’t anticipate any major changes in retail sales or visitation. In order to help accommodate for the changes, Grant Ave. has been converted to a two-way street from Sutter to Geary. As usual, you can get more information and alternate routes on the Central Subway Blog.

Here is some of the news coverage:

San Francisco Prepares for a Busy Summer

May 11, 2012

The SF Chronicle reported last week that this summer is slated to be one of San Francisco's busiest in recent years. With several major world-class events on this summer's schedule, the city's tourism, restaurant, and retail industries are sure to get a major boost. Hotel reservations throughout Union Square and the rest of the city have already picked up considerably.

Uniqlo to Make its West Coast Debut in Union Square

May 11, 2012

The San Francisco Business Times divulges the details on Japanese retail giant Uniqlo's installment set to open up shop in Union Square this fall. In a move guaranteed to boost Union Square's global appeal, the retailer is taking over the old DSW space on 111 Powell, making this their fourth American outlet and their first venture on the West Coast.

Central Subway Update

May 7, 2012

We had our Central Subway update meeting last week and some interesting developments came to light. Expect large equipment to show up on Stockton Street to help create the underground tunnel. Also, the contractor is hoping to shut down the whole street (rather than leaving a lane for taxis) and save 3 months off of the total work time for this phase of the project. You can view the full presentation here.
