BigBelly “Smart” Trash Receptacle Pilot

BigBelly “Smart” Trash Receptacle Pilot

The USBID contracted with BigBelly, a provider of smart waste and recycling systems, to pilot five, solar-powered trash compaction units in Union Square starting in August 2016.  The highly-efficient units use solar power to compact waste and send a wireless alert signal to the USBID indicating when the units are reaching capacity and need emptying. Benefits of the self-contained trash receptacles include, total litter containment to deter illegal scavenging and pests, increased trash capacity, tamper resistant locking mechanisms, and a web-based “dashboard” to increase collection efficiency. We’re grateful to our partners, San Francisco Public Works and Recology, for their assistance with launching this one-year pilot program.
