2011 Union Square Gift Guides: For the Kids

This holiday season we’re bringing you a series of gift guides to help you navigate the shops here in Union Square. We know there’s a lot going on here from huge flagship department stores to small independent boutiques, and you might need a guide to assist you in finding the perfect gift for a friend or family member. We’re starting with those most excited and enthusiastic of gift receivers – the kids! Whether it’s your own children, a niece, nephew, cousin or other special little one in your life – it’s a wonderful feeling to see their eyes light up when you hand them a big box wrapped in colorful paper or you see them wearing that adorable onesie you picked out. You may not think of Union Square as a place with a large variety of children’s options, but we actually have a lot of fun stuff to offer for the young ones on your shopping list. Here are some of our favorite shops and gifts for the kids in your life.

A search for children’s gifts must begin with possibly the most magical store in Union Square – the Disney Store on Stockton Street (just down the street from what some consider the adult equivalent - the Apple Store). It’s amazing how the classics truly hold up in this little wonderland. Our favorites include this Princess Doll Collection, which has characters that you’ll remember from your childhood like Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White alongside more contemporary Disney fairytale heroines like Mulan and Rapunzel. Mickey still makes appearances as well; although now he’s decked out in a fancy costume in this Pirates of the Caribbean Pirate Ship Play Set. While clothing doesn’t always solicit the same squealing reactions from kids – you can find cute and stylish duds for them at the Children’s Place on Sutter Street as well as some adorable accessories for the very little ones like this ridiculously cute hooded reindeer blanket –just picture an adorable little tot wrapped in that on Christmas morning! For toddlers who need something to romp around in this holiday season, they offer these sweet green striped holiday coveralls. If you know parents or are parents who want to take baby everywhere this holiday season, including up to the mountains to enjoy some real holiday snow, you’ll want to check out this snowsuit for kids 1-18 months old. They also carry whimsical and fashionable clothes for the elementary school set. We can’t imagine a little girl who wouldn’t be absolutely charmed by this “golden glam” party dress or a little boy who wouldn’t look dapper in this sweater vest and collared shirt.

If you enjoy outfitting your children in such fashionable clothes that even adults will feel they need to step up their game, you’ll want to stop by our flagship Macy’s and check out their selection of children’s apparel. They have everything from Ralph Lauren to poufy party dresses for a wide range of ages. For instance, check out this super sophisticated leopard print tunic and leggings set. This would make a fabulous gift from any aunt to a budding fashionista. They also carry Ruby Rox dresses. This brand offers trendy, beautiful clothes for young ladies like this purple number that would make any girl feel special at a holiday party. Boys who want to look cool on the playground might be partial to this combination hoodie and plaid shirt or perhaps a collared sweater by Nautica. Another great option for baby and children’s fashion is our flagship Gap store in the Flood Building complete with GapKids and BabyGap sections. They have a very sweet selection of baby girl clothing in their “Winter Resort Collection,” including an adorable fluffy bunny-eared hat and white ballerina skirt. And for the elementary school set, they offer tons of brightly colored, casual kids’ clothes in their “I Want Candy” collection.

If you’re shopping for kids who would appreciate electronic goodies, Gamestop on Powell Street carries many video games that are rated EC (meaning their appropriate for all ages three and up) and E (good for kids 10 and up), including a series of Sesame Street educational games for the Wii and some quirky choices like Ni Hao, Kai-Lan: New Year’s Celebration – another educational game for the Nintendo DS centered around the Chinese New Year’s celebration. Kids who are a bit older will love the Lego series of video games, including LEGO Harry Potter just released for kids ages 5-7. If you’re looking for something a little more unique, you might try Hannspree up on Sutter Street. There, you can purchase goofy items like this giraffe TV set and this elephant shaped digital photo frame.

This wouldn’t be a Union Square gift guide without mentioning a few luxury items for those lucky kiddies who just seem to have everything. Tiffany & Co. has a whole collection of sterling silver baby gifts, such as this silver piggy bank or this surprisingly elegant silver bubble blower. The perfect outfit to go with these lavish accessories can be found at our flagship Burberry store, where you can get this chic turquoise trench for girls or this checkered pea coat for little boys. If you want to get the little girl in your life on the road to fashion early, you can stop by Juicy Couture for this casual pink velour suit, and for the slightly older wannabe fashion queen, a faux fur pea coat might do. Whether the special little kid in your life would prefer to splash around in puddles or blow bubbles from their silver bubble blower sporting a Burberry coat, we have you covered here in Union Square. Of course, another great gift is spending time with little ones, and if you need a fun holiday activity, you can always bring them out to the ice skating rink on the Square or to say hi to Santa in the Westfield San Francisco Centre. No matter what, enjoy their enthusiasm for the season, because they grow up fast!
