Call it Columbus Day or Indigenous People’s Day – no matter what you prefer, San Francisco is exploding with events next weekend Oct. 5-8, and we wanted to give you a heads up! While not all of them take place in Union Square, this is definitely a great home base if you’re staying in a hotel here or even if you just want to meet up and hop on transit. Many of these events are not so parking-friendly, but the SFMTA has you covered with an America's Cup plan and suggested routes for all the festivities. From the Blue Angels whizzing overhead to thrilling America’s Cup races, it’s going to be a wild weekend.
The America’s Cup World Series is your chance to preview the teams that will compete in next year’s big event – the Louis Vuitton Cup in July 2013. Until then, the teams are competing for the World Series championship and ranking that will give them an edge in the main races. This fall’s events marks the first time the teams will compete in San Francisco – with our strong winds and the massive AC race boats, it’s sure to be an exciting time. Bleacher seating, food and drinks will be available on the Marina Green. Ticket info and more is available here.
In case you didn’t know, Fleet Week isn’t just about fancy plane tricks; it’s also about disaster preparedness and relief as well as honoring the folks who serve our country in the Navy. Check out our blog post all about the history and mission of the week’s events. This year you can enjoy parades of various impressive naval vessels all weekend, Naval bands playing all over the city, and of course, mind-blowing maneuvers by the Blue Angels. Check out the full schedule of events for Fleet Week 2012.
Italian Heritage Parade
Another traditional San Francisco favorite, the Italian Heritage Parade takes place Columbus Day weekend as well. This year will mark the 144th anniversary of this long-standing parade, which includes floats representing local and civic organizations, live music and performance artists, folks dressed in Columbus and Queen Isabella costumes, Italian food and wine and more. If you’re a fan of Italian culture or cuisine, it’s the place to be on Sunday Oct. 7, so we suggest you hop on a cable car, find a spot on Columbus Ave. and enjoy!
Many of you have been hotly anticipating Uniqlo’s West Coast premier on Powell Street, and they just happened to choose the same weekend as all this activity to throw open their doors. Yes, there will definitely be specials on their colorful basics on Oct. 5 at the official opening, but they’re not releasing details. You’ll have to show up to find out. In the meantime, you can play the Maru the cat game on their website. How is this relevant, you say? It’s a silly cat video that ends in some fun giveaways, including their signature ultra-light down and tickets to Uniqlo events.
It’s not open to the public, but it’s good to know that this major software and technology conference will be taking place in the city this weekend. Most of the action takes place at Moscone Center, but they’ll also be taking over portions of Union Square Park for breakout sessions and concerts. While the concerts are meant for OpenWorld attendees, we have a feeling that Union Square neighbors will be getting a dose of Joss Stone when she plays in the open air of the park.
And that's not all! Hardly Strictly Bluegrass is hitting Golden Gate Park for the 12th time. The Castro Street Fair will take place on Oct. 7, and the 49ers are playing the Buffalo Bills in Candlestick Park. Get ready for a packed weekend!
