Get out for Fashion's Night Out in the Square

August is coming to a close, kids are going back to school, and fall is upon us. Here in Union Square that means it’s time to check out fall fashion trends and do a little shopping (or maybe a lot)! We’re lucky enough to boast one of the largest collections of luxury, department and boutique stores on the West Coast, which means there’s a store for everyone’s taste and budget, and this September we’re taking fall fashion to a new level with our Fashion’s Night Out (FNO) celebration. If you need to get inspired to spice up your wardrobe for the fall and winter months, this is the night to go out in Union Square. It’s like having a personal trunk show with refreshments, but at all of your favorite Union Square stores. All the action is here in Union Square on September 8th, starting at 5 PM.

Since this event is all about the hottest trends in fall fashion, we did a little homework to give you a sneak preview of what you should expect on the live models, mannequins and racks this September 8th. We spoke with local designer Joseph Domingo who founded the San Francisco Bay Area Fashion Network (SFBAFN), has his own label and maintains an atelier just outside of Union Square at 808 Post Street. Domingo has five favorite trends for the fall and winter months this year:

  • * Navy is the go-to color for men, and deep crimson red for women.
  • * Incorporate thick wool cable scarves with light flowy skirts and dresses to add texture and interest to an outfit, plus keep you warm!
  • * Skinny black pants are in for men, while women can break out their short black skirts (along with some leggings if it’s cold).
  • * Pair these essential pieces with bold black and silver jewelry and accessories for a modern look.
  • * Boots, boots, boots! for both men and women anywhere from ankle to knee height.

Domingo hosts two fashion shows with the SFBAFN each year. If you’re dying to see what’s in this year and simply can’t wait for FNO, check out "The Collection" show on August 27th, which will feature local talent alongside his own pieces. More info and tickets here.

Another trend we expect to see in all its glory at FNO is camouflage in everything from separates to party dresses. Patterns are also big, like cheery polka dots and bold plaids. And we’ll be seeing mustard hues strewn about store windows. If you’re into bold looks, you’ll love the flashy pants trend. Bright, boldly colored capris and pants are on the list of must-haves this fall. For those who are a bit more conservative, black and white tux-inspired looks were also seen on runways this year, and old-fashioned lace is seeing a new life as a flattering accent to frilly skirts and dresses.

While reading about fashion trends is helpful as you plan your wardrobe for the coming months, experiencing it live is even better, and that’s what Fashion’s Night Out is all about. And what a night it will be! This is your opportunity to really dive into fashion and explore what looks you want to don this fall. Union Square’s eclectic mix of shops have planned an evening filled with celebrity guests, live music, special giveaways and many other fashion-forward surprises. Fashion-savvy visitors will experience everything from one-on-one consultations with local fashion writers to mini-makeovers to chatting with lauded fashion designers in-person about their new fall lines.

Some stores are even giving the event a San Francisco twist by incorporating a tech component and inviting local fashion bloggers to speak with guests and give presentations. Many stores are extending hours, showcasing their new fall lines and offering yummy refreshments from vendors like Mission Mini’s, Chandon and Popchips. Other activities include mini-makeovers at Banana Republic, a decorate it yourself Hanky Panky panty station at Neiman Marcus, an appearance by Real Housewives Star Sonja Morgan at Macy’s Union Square and a self-serve candy bar at Fashionphile. Several stores are also offering handy and unique giveaways such as a free pair of lenses with purchase of a new pair of frames from Spectacles on Maiden Lane, a colorful collar bone pouch with $200 purchase at Thomas Pink and free tote bags with fragrance from Marc Jacobs. It’s a night not to miss for any fashionistas or fashionistos who want to stock their closets with the hottest new lines from all of Union Square’s top retailers. A complete lineup of shop programs is available here, so you can plan a full evening around your favorite shops, fashion celebs and activities.
