Insider Tips for San Francisco Visitors

Union Square is an excellent destination for locals and tourists alike. Because we have such a diverse set of visitors every day, we thought it’d be wise to offer you a guide from an insider’s perspective.

Bring All-Weather Gear

Our first bit of advice is simple: wear layers! Embrace our famous fog, known as “Karl the Fog.” Karl is infamous for blowing in when you’re enjoying the summer sun wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Ladies, we recommend leggings or tights (American Apparel has some stylish ones). Always carry a sweater and a light jacket (you never know when the wind will pick up).

Catch a Show

San Francisco isn’t New York, but our theatre district is one of a kind. Critically acclaimed Broadway shows come through at SHN theaters and the prestigious American Conservatory Theater makes its home here, always putting on a stellar production. Also, you can find something a little more edgy and intimate at our smaller theaters like SF Playhouse or The Alcove.

Visit Local Boutiques

Not only is Union Square home to flagship department stores and the luxury boutiques of top international brands, we also have a hand full of quirky and unique San Francisco-based stores like the well-curated mix of fashion-forward goods at Ethos, the wall-to-wall fabric store Britex Fabrics or the impressive luxury department store Gump’s.

Eat, Eat, Eat!

If SF is known for one thing (besides the Golden Gate Bridge) it’s probably our fresh, local and tasty cuisine! In Union Square, we have a whole slew of new cocktail-driven restaurants with tasty bites that are easy to share and pair nicely with a glass of wine. Dirty Habit offers stellar cocktails, a lovely patio area and high-end bites from the former Fifth Floor team. Bartlett Hall is a great place to grab a locally-made beer and nosh on everything from flatbread pizza to chef Emmanual Eng’s famous butter burger. Plus, you can embrace your inner Francophile with Cali-French cuisine and aperitifs at Gaspar Brasserie. Learn more about the new restaurants in Union Square here.
