Jewels in the Square: Lunch just got way better in Union Square!

Every year as April approaches, we start to get really excited around Union Square. Not only do all our cafes open up their outdoor patios as the sun comes out and we begin to see more visitors enjoying themselves while spending a lazy afternoon in Union Square Park, but Jewels in the Square returns! Jewels is a series of stellar performances done on the stage in Union Square Park every spring and summer that is totally free to enjoy! We encourage you to break out your sunglasses, grab an iced latte and take in talented dancers, singers, circus performers and other artists as they add a little sparkle to our bustling neighborhood. Performances are generally Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. (perfect time to grab a picnic lunch with a show) and 6:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. (a great time to bring the family down). In this article, we highlight a few of our favorite performers and shows coming our way this spring!

Bay Area Dance Week Kick-off – 4/20/11 12:30 p.m.

Each year, we host the start of Bay Area Dance Week with One Dance’s all-out dance celebration. Check the One Dance website beforehand and learn the choreography to participate in this flash mob and party! DJ Juan Data will keep the energy going all afternoon. While you're dancing, you can meet some of the teachers, choreographers and other artists who will be holding free events all week.

7th Annual Fire Dance Expo – 4/21/12 8-10 p.m.

We’re suckers for anything that gets lit on fire – cocktails, fireworks and dancers! As part of Bay Area Dance week, Temple of Poi will put on the 7th Annual Fire Dance Expo in Union Square Park. Set after dusk for maximum fire drama, this is a great time to grab a blanket and a hot beverage, cuddle up to a loved one and be dazzled by the magic of fire dancing.

The She’s – 5/13/12 2:00 p.m.

This adorable, local pop rock teenage girl band is the perfect summer afternoon entertainment. The She’s just released a new album, appropriately named Then it Starts to Feel Like Summer. Let’s hope the weather cooperates this summer, so you can enjoy their sweet stage presence and knack for vocal harmonies while sunning yourself in the park.

Swing in the Square – The West Coast Ramblers 5/23/12 6-8 p.m.

Swing in the Square (along with Tango in the Square) is a special series of shows within the Jewels in the Square program that get the audience up and out of their seats and dancing along with the performers. These nights all start with a free dance lesson followed by a live band and DJs. To kick things off, the West Coast Ramblers, a Bay Area country swing band will bring you back to the 40’s and 50’s with influences like Tex Williams, Hank Penny, and Billy Jack Wills.

David Correa and CASCADA – 5/30/12 12:30 p.m.

This band captures a spicy blend of Latin guitar and world fusion with the sounds of Nuevo Flamenco, Latin folk, Afro-Cuban and Middle Eastern melodies paired with gypsy guitar solos. With all these influences, they’re equally appealing as a band to simply listen to on a summer afternoon or one to get up and dance to, especially if you’re familiar with Latin ballroom dances.

These are just a few of the tantalizing shows that will be happening in Union Square this summer. We hope you have a chance to catch one and take advantage of this unique display of local and national talent.
