Must Hit Holiday Events in Union Square, San Francisco

**Guest Post from the team at the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink

There is nothing greater than the city of San Francisco lit up for the holidays and there is no better location to experience this than Union Square! We love participating in holiday traditions and creating new ones every year. Check out these very San Francisco holiday traditions and festivities when you’re planning your next holiday outing.

The Macy’s Great Tree Lighting

Every year Macy’s presents its gift to the city—a beautiful, reusable 83 foot tree decorated with more than 33,000 twinkling energy-efficient LED lights and 1,100 shining ornaments. Now in its 24th year, the tree lighting ceremony has become a beloved San Francisco tradition. The ceremony will take place this evening at 6 pm with holiday performances by singer, songwriter, and musician Judith Hill, finalist from season four of The Voice, and a special performance by 18-year-old singer Shelby Miguel, a Wish Ambassador from Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area.  The San Francisco Boy's choir, the famed Glide Ensemble and premier co-ed a capella group, Artists in Resonance from UC Berkeley will also perform.

The Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Alaska Airlines

Ice skating is a timeless tradition and the ice rink in Union Square is the premier location in San Francisco, nestled among the beautiful holiday lights. The season is in full swing and continues through Jan. 20. To purchase tickets or for more information, visit  or download the ice rink’s virtual queue app at iTunes and GooglePlay stores. The app has special offers and can act as a virtual queue, allowing you the freedom to explore Union Square while waiting for your turn to ice skate. Plus, the ice rink has a number of fun and unique events this year:

Macy’s Holiday Lane Decorating Seminar

Visit the festive Holiday Lane on the seventh floor in Macy’s Union Square to see lavishly decorated Christmas trees and thousands of ornaments. Macy’s will hold a Christmas tree decorating seminar on Dec. 6 at 1 pm to teach shoppers to decorate like a pro! And of course, the holidays would not be the same without a visit to Santa. Old St. Nick will listen to holiday wishes and be available for portraits in Macy's Santaland®, also on the seventh floor, starting Nov. 29 to Dec. 24.
