Union Square Live: Free Concerts in Union Square SF

What could be better than sitting in the center of San Francisco on a sunny day enjoying a fabulous musical or dance performance? Not much, in our opinion. Union Square Live – our free series of live shows in Union Square Park - just started, so it’s time to bust out your baseball caps and sunglasses and join us for an afternoon or evening in the park! These performances are generally on Wednesdays at 12:30 and 6:00 pm and on Sundays at 2:00 pm, but schedules do vary. Check out our events page for up to date listings. Here are some of the highlights from the next couple of months:

Temple of Poi Fire Dance Expo – Apr. 27, 8-10pm

There isn’t much out there that’s more impressive than fire dancers in the dark! Bring layers and nighttime picnic gear to enjoy Temple of Poi - the largest public fire dancing show in the Western Hemisphere, celebrating its 8th year in action. Enjoy a two hour family-friendly program featuring artists of all ages and skill levels as they wield a variety of flaming tools on the beautiful Union Square stage. We suggest you arrive early for best view!

Salsa in the Square: SF State’s Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble – May 1, 6-8pm

This unique instrumental and vocal ensemble organically creates its own new and exciting arrangements each semester with teacher John Calloway at the helm. They seek to expose more people to the richness of Cuban music that has so influenced American music since the 19th century. The ensemble performs other styles of music from Latin America and the U.S. as well to spice things up.

Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno – May 8, 12:30-1:30pm

Ballet Folklorico Mexicano de Carlos Moreno (BFM) educates and empowers the public through colorful and exciting traditional Mexican costumes, music, dance and cultural art forms.

Bu Falle African Drum and Dance – May 19, 2-3pm

Bu Falle works to integrate traditional African music, dance, history, and culture into public schools. Students learn about African songs, drums, rhythm, and movement through assemblies and artist-in-residencies, and this summer they’ll be showing off this wonderful cultural experience in Union Square Park.

Swing in the Square with the West Coast Ramblers – Jun. 26, 6-8pm

We love the Swing in the Square series within the Union Square Live series, which features live music and DJs plus free dance lessons for those who need a little refresher before getting up and dancing their hearts out! The West Coast Ramblers are a charming Western Swing band that captures that late-40's/early-50's California Western Swing sound made popular by performers like Tex Williams, Hank Penny, and Billy Jack Wills. They’re sure to put a little jive in yours step!

Fingersnaps DJ & Art Collective Celebrate SF Pride – Jun. 30, 2-4pm
