Unconventional gallery spaces have quickly become a trend in San Francisco, with art exhibits popping up in hotel lobbies, open air markets, retail shops and even parklets (mini parks in parking spaces around San Francisco).
The Mystic Hotel by Charlie Palmer has long been a pioneer of hosting Bay Area artists since debuting their first artist back in 2012 as part of our now annual Art Series. Since then, our boutique hotel, located just a block away from Union Square, has welcomed a different local artist each quarter.
The white walls of the hotel lobby are a blank canvas for these talented artists, hosting acrylic paintings, staged interventions and more. For this installment of the Art Series, San Francisco Art Institute graduate Percy Cannon, who holds a Masters in Fine Art, will debut his work this May with the exhibition he calls SKY LEVEL.
Cannon forges a contemporary path in abstraction. While the paintings reference the Bay Area artist’s commute from Highway 4 through Cummings Skyway, the primary concern is not landscape but rather the relationship of color to time and memory.
Variable recollections and chromatic structures mingle, creating diverse spaces suggestive of the flat screen of the Mario Brothers video games, quirky passages of a Giotto fresco or the view from a moving car.
On view through July 2015, the Mystic Hotel by Charlie Palmer invites you to the opening reception for Percy Cannon on Thursday, May 7th from 5:30 to 7:00pm. Toast to his work with refreshments and light bites from Burritt Tavern and enjoy the opportunity to meet Cannon and mingle with fellow art aficionados. Please RSVP here.
