This was not an easy gift guide to put together. Let’s face it, you could walk into almost any store in Union Square and find something that would delight the special ladies in your life. We have so much choice from small boutiques to large department stores filled to the brim with women’s apparel, accessories, jewelry, makeup and shoes. But, just in case you need some gift inspiration to help you impress your significant other, daughter, grandmother or best friend, we’ve gone through the many, many choices available here and highlighted some unique and fashion-friendly items that just might do the trick. We’ve placed special emphasis on newcomers to the Square this year, while still nodding to our longtime standbys.
Jewelry, of course, comes to mind when you’re looking for something to wow the women in your life. Men often seem to fret that they will have a hard time picking out the proper piece, but the truth is most women are happy to get anything that sparkles and shows that you care (Besides, most of our stores have excellent exchange policies).Graff Diamonds joined our community this year with a beautiful new flagship store on Post Street. The luxury diamond retailers from London have a wide selection of high-end pieces and cuts that would absolutely astonish most ladies out there. If you’re truly going all out, you might consider the GraffSuperstar 38 watch, which features a total of 341 diamonds and 12 trapeze cut emeralds. Only 30 of these babies were made, so you’ll be sure to completely blow here away with this one. If you prefer the sparkle of diamonds without the price tag of the real thing, the new flagship Swarovski on Geary Street is a safe bet. They offer a stylish red crystal cuff bracelet would certainly make any fashionable girl happy. If you want something a little more trendy, check out their pepper pendant – an unusual take on the heart-shaped necklace with a contrasting stich line down the middle in either black or white, perfect for a daring fashionista. If your girl is into poetry, you might try Jeanine Payer on Market Street. This sweet little shop specializes in poetically engraved jewelry like their Barcelona heart necklace which features moon stones, silver vines with tiny green diamonds and a beautiful quote about love by Iam Burgham. They even have engraved earrings, such as their irresistible-to-any-literature-buff Atia earrings with “I dwell in possibility,” by Emily Dickinson on them. This is truly just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to jewelry in Union Square, so be sure to check out our previous blog post on boutique jewelry shops for further ideas.
Frocks & Fringe
Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit more practical – maybe a gift to keep her warm during this brisk winter we’re having in San Francisco? We have some uncommon takes on the traditional sweater and glove set here that will surely excite a trendsetting lady. Stop in our new outpost of the edgy British clothing store AllSaints and check out their cashmere and mother of pearl “jumper” A.K.A. a gorgeous shimmering sweater with a mother of pearl collar inspired by British Royalty. She’ll feel like a queen without wearing a gaudy tiara. If she prefers something a bit more subtle, you might consider the Lendra Coat – an understated asymmetrical wool coat, sure to keep her warm and looking chic. AllSaints also carries a number of handbags, shoes and other accessories with that East London look, including this absolutely rock and roll fringe handbag. If your lady is a little more demure, you may want to check out our two story Anthropologie store on Market Street. There, you can find a whimsical mauve and silver sequined sweater and a cute striped, long sleeved dress, which makes a great winter wardrobe addition. Anthropologie also carries a wide selection of jewelry, home accessories and other fun adornments like spotted gloves in cheery colors and if you know her shoe size, their Pergola Booties with beautiful latticed details and a little bow are to die for.
Unlike many of the other shops on this list, Gump’s can truly call itself a piece of San Francisco history, having originally opened in 1861 as a mirror and framing business. The store has gone through several transformations since then and now boasts a wide variety of imported housewares, accessories, jewelry, antiques and a recently expanded selection of women’s apparel. One such item is an elegant floral jacket, made to look like silk sans the hassle, which would make a lovely gift for the mature women in your life. In the accessories department, you might consider a beautiful black velvet and beige fleur de lis handbag or a delicate purple and pink wool scarf. If you’re shopping for a trendsetter you can stop by one of the newest additions to the Westfield San Francisco Centre – Madewell. This little-sister store to J. Crew offers a curated selection of smart, casual clothes and accessories. For the youthful lady in your life, you might try a cute polka dotted sweater in either pink or mustard yellow, or you may want to splurge on their rustic leather satchel, great for someone who wants to carry books or a laptop in style.
Trinkets & Treasures
Fragrance and other beauty products are perhaps a more traditional approach to gifting your lady. While there is an expansive selection of designer fragrances at any of our flagship department stores, you can also find these items at some of our smaller boutiques like Diptyque on Maiden Lane. This Parisian shop specializes in both personal fragrance and home fragrances that make wonderful gifts. If you know your giftee very well, you might try purchasing a spicy winter eau de cologne like their Eau Lente – a lovely mixture of vanilla, cinnamon and Indian spices that would make a fabulous winter perfume. However, if you’re still figuring out her tastes, you could try something for the home like an elegant Winter Coffret set of three candles with woodsy and spicy notes. For a full line of luxurious body products you can stop by Fresh on Grant Avenue. They have many fun winter gift ideas, including a Brown Sugar Affair Gift Set featuring their brown sugar body cream and tinted lip treatment, sure to be a sweet treat for any gal who’s into natural skin care. If you’re looking for something to bring a breath of spring into her morning routine, you might consider their Citron de Vigne gift set, which features their signature Champagne-inspired scent and includes eau de parfum, lotion and bath cubes.
We know any of these gifts would make the ladies in your life glow with joy this holiday season. Yet, this is really just scratching the surface of the numerous gift possibilities in Union Square. We can only hope that these items get the ideas flowing and inspire you to find gifts that will surprise and dazzle the women in your life.
