Icebreaker is a new athletic store that just joined what has come to be known as the “Outdoor Alley” of Union Square – a block along Post Street between Stockton and Kearny where you can find North Face, Marmot, and Niketown with Lululemon Athletica just around the corner. At Icebreaker, we’re big fans of the technical outerwear from these trusted sports brands and think that our Merino wool t-shirts and base layers pair beautifully with them.
What’s the story with Merino wool, you ask? Say you’re getting ready to head out on your daily run; you grab your socks and sneakers, then, instead of reaching for an old college T-shirt made of moisture-holding cotton, you grab your new Merino wool top, which is breathable, odor-free and will keep you dry throughout your workout. Our store specializes in this magically soft, stink-free wool from Merino sheep in New Zealand. Plus, we have more than just running tops; we can cover you from head to toe in the best of it.
Our New Zealand Merino wool is lightweight, breathable and easy to care for with cutting edge designs. The company started in 1994 in New Zealand, when founder Jeremy Moon saw a long underwear top a farmer had made from Merino wool. “It felt soft and sensual, looked lustrous and was totally natural,” says Jeremy. “It was nothing like the wool I had grown up with, which was heavy and scratchy. And you could throw this stuff in the washing machine.” Jeremy took the idea and ran with it, creating a global company that now offers a full range of clothing for running, cycling, travel and everyday life.
Icebreaker is globally known for its sleek design aesthetic, encompassing a sophisticated urban look as well as a powerful, contoured, athletic silhouette. Graphics are directly inspired by New Zealand’s magnificent geography and indigenous plant and animal life. We even offer a line of sumptuous underwear for those who want our Merino wool as close to their skin as possible.
So, are you getting ready to trek the Milford Sound? Ride Slick Rock? Take a 16 hour flight to Nairobi? Enjoy an afternoon of power shopping in Union Square? Icebreaker has you covered. Come join the herd at 170 Post!
