Did you wait until the last minute to buy your sweetheart a gift for Valentine’s Day? Fear not, you can still endear yourself to your date with a quick trip to Union Square. Hopefully, you’ve taken our advice and planned a lovely evening of some sort (hint: if you haven’t, a classic walk in the park, followed by a home-cooked meal is always a great backup), but for the coup de grace of your evening you need something unique and heartfelt to offer to your date – a token of your love and a way of remembering this specific Valentine’s Day as a special moment in their lives. OK, that’s a lot to ask a gift, but we have a few thoughtful, fun and memorable gifts to recommend that might just put a smile on your date’s face and make up for any cooking snafus that might take place.
Uncommon Gifts for the Ladies
If you’ve just begun your relationship with your Valentine or you’re simply on a budget, you’ll probably want to hold off on diamonds and designer dresses and consider something a bit more cute and casual. We’re partial to an adorable tote made by alphabet bags printed with the words “The bee’s knees” from Madewell, which will subtly let her know how you feel. Better yet, include a pair of sweet Diane Von Ferstenburg ear buds adorned with red hearts from Saks Fifth Avenue, so she can think of you while she’s listening to her favorite tunes. Want something she can wear and show off to her friends? How about a romantic crystal-studded headband from Anthropologie? This lovely piece by Firecracked Paths has an almost Victorian look that would go great in curls. We’re also partial to their Bellis Bobbies - silk and bead flower hair clips that make a cute but elegant gift for your lucky lady. For something a bit more sophisticated try a Japanese floral wool scarf with fanning, sequined black flowers on a beige background from Kate Spade. This gorgeous accessory will keep her warm during our cool San Francisco spring and exudes style and elegance. If she’s smitten, they carry several other accessories in the same design for future gifting opportunities. Does your lady have a sweet tooth? You might want to take a field trip to our charming little candy shop – Fionna’s Sweet Shoppe and let her choose from the rainbow colored jars and bins filled with candies from all over the UK and Europe.
Ready to take it a step further with your gal? How about a rare and unique piece of jewelry, such as an antique garnet pendant from Metier? This piece dates back to the late 19th century and will surely blow your girl away with its absolute beauty. If you’d prefer something a bit more classic, try the Tiffany & Co. Infinity Pendant – a simple but lovely piece to symbolize your endless love for her. For those ladies who are really into the frilly pinks and reds, you might want to stop by Swarovski and check out their Valentine’s Day collection. For the truly girly girl, we recommend a rose-colored heart pendant. Yes, it’s a little over the top, but Valentine’s Day makes a great excuse for some pink bling.
Unusual Gifts for the Gents
We have plenty of unique gift ideas for the guys in your lives as well. One of our first stops would surely be Thomas Pink – where you can purchase a variety of appropriately themed pink shirts or go the super adorable route and buy him a pair of heart-shaped cuff links. They come with either large red cubic zirconia hearts or plain silver hearts. If he has a penchant for flair, you might consider a black tie adorned with pink and red hearts or a blue and white striped shirt embedded with tiny roses (pictured above). If your man is into a more urban look, you can make a visit to Industrie Denim. While this store specializes in carrying a wide variety of designer denim brands, they also have a carefully curated selection of accessories and goods. We recommend a raw steel watch by Nixon – it’s quite masculine, but still stylish. We’re also big fans of Karikter for thoughtful little gifts. They have a nice assortment of moleskin notebooks and sharp-looking card cases that would make excellent gifts for any businessman.
The DIY Way
If you’d prefer a DIY approach to things, we can help with that too. We suggest a trip to Williams-Sonoma for some heart-shaped cookie cutters or a Valentine’s Day cupcake decorating set. Just pull up your favorite cupcake or cookie recipe, find a way to make the treats when your Valentine isn’t around, then slip them into his or her office or work place during a lunch break. There’s just something about fresh baked goods from your sweetheart that will never go out of style. Are you dreaming of hearts and cupid arrows yet? Hopefully, one of these uncommon gifts will fit the bill for your date this Valentine’s, but if you need more inspiration, you can check out Valentine’s gift guides from Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and Barney’s. Oh, and even if you don’t have a date or simply found yourself enamored with one of these items, it never hurts to do a little self-gifting – we won’t tell.
